Short trips in the last years

In September 2009 we drove to the city of Schladming in the Austrian Alps. We were there for one week and enjoied the mountains and the beautiful weather. At the beginning we chartered a small airplane and flew over one of the most beautiful areas of Austria. On the next days we went on a few hikes among others on the Dachstein glacier.

At the end of October 2009 we met Gerhard's relatives from the USA - Erica and Alan B. McKillop in Paterno (60 miles north-east of Rome, region Lacio/ Italy). They had invited us to stay with them in a villa in this little village in the Apennin mountains. Under the friendly guidance of Susan and Bruno Micocci, caretakers of the villa when the owners are not there, we drove around and visited old medieval villages. We had a lot of fun, ate a LOT of pasta and drank a lot of wine. After a week in Italy the McKillops visited us in our house in St.Andrä-Wördern for another week. Together we went on a trip on the Danube to Bratislava (The capital of Slovakia, 60 km (37 ml) east of Vienna, where Ericas father once visited a officer's academy. We also went to the opera (Fidelio) and a concert in Vienna.

In October 2019 Monica invited me (it was my 75th birthday) and two friends to a helicopter flight to the restaurant "Steirereck am Pogusch". This restaurant is situated in the mountains. The outward flight (1 hour) to the south was nice and we had good weather. We had a very delicious lunch there. The return flight was not so easy. Because it started to rain and snow, the pilot could not cross the mountains (Alps). So we had to make an intermediate landing at a little town (Kapfenberg) to refuel the helicopter and to wait for better weather. After one hour we could continue our flight but we had to detour quite far till we could cross the mountains. On the other side of the mountains, in the Danube valley the weather was much better and we reached our airport (Krems / Gneixendorf) shortly before sunset. The trip back took 3 hours. Both on the way there and on the way back we had spectacular views of the mountains and the Danube valley (Wachau).
